"Eastie", established in 1836, was created using landfill to connect five Boston Harbor islands. The waterfront location made it a center for shipbuilding and other marine industries — a legacy that continues today. Encompassing so much more than Logan International Airport, Eastie is currently undergoing a real estate renaissance. The neighborhood was historically an immigrant stronghold, transitioning from overwhelmingly Italian in the early and mid-20th century to Latin American in recent decades. Developers and builders alike have flocked to the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood, resulting in new, glistening condos and an influx of young professionals. Eastie is home to Boston's most scenic waterfront spaces such as LoPresti and Piers parks overlooking the harbor, as well as sandy Constitution Beach. Eastie also features Boston Harbor Shipyard, home to the ICA Watershed, a summer-only contemporary art gallery, plus outdoor sculptures and the uber-popular Down East Cider House. A laid-back dining scene encompasses traditional Italian cuisine, as well as native offerings from Central and South America.
